Comprehensive Eye Examinations

Comprehensive eye exams are more than reading letters on an eye chart and getting an eyeglass or contact lens prescription. We also perform a thorough medical examination of the eye, checking both external and internal eye health. We examine for glaucoma, cataracts and many other eye diseases and conditions. Many times these diseases do not cause any symptoms, so we check for them regularly and encourage all our patients to have their eyes thoroughly examined on a regular basis.

Different patients have different visual demands. That is why your visual needs will be fully evaluated and your eye exam will be customized to you and your lifestyle.

Your eyesight is important to everything you do. We want to keep your vision sharp and your eyes healthy. Our office stresses preventative care for our patients.

SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR EYE EXAM:

Bring a list of all the medications you are currently taking.

Bring your current glasses, even if you normally wear contact lenses.

If you normally wear contact lenses, wear them to your exam and bring a written copy of your current prescription (or bring the boxes or vials the contact lenses came in)

If you know that you have a condition that may require special attention and are a new patient, ask your former eye care provider to send us a copy of your records.

WHEN SHOULD YOU HAVE YOUR NEXT EYE EXAMINATION?

Many people equate the need for an eye examination with replacing their eyeglasses. While it is certainly important to see well, undesireable changes in your eyes can occur which do not adversely affect vision in the early stages. Unlike the rest of your body, your eyes rarely hurt when something is wrong. Do not rely on changes in your vision or broken glasses to remind you of your next appointment. Follow the advice of experts and have your eyes examined on a regular basis.

Your Healthy Vision

Tonge Eye Care uses state of the art equipment to assess your eye health. Some of the innovative tests we can perform include:

Retinal Photography

Computerized Visual Field Exam

Pachymetry

GDX Vcc Glaucoma Screening

Optomap Retinal Exam

We are pleased to inform you that during your next visit to TONGE EYE CARE, you will experience the benefits of the latest technology in eye exams – the Optomap™ Retinal Exam. The Optomap will produce the most comprehensive image of your retina, and allow us to perform a more thorough exam than was previously possible. The result is that we can better prevent or reduce vision loss in our patients with a simple, quick and patient-friendly new exam.

Any routine eye exam should always include a careful look at the retina, which is located at the back of the eye, to screen for abnormalities or disease. The sensitive tissue that makes up the retina is susceptible to a variety of diseases that can ultimately lead to partial loss of vision or even complete blindness. Early detection of any retinal abnormality is thus crucial. Previously, this screening was done by dilating the pupils, a procedure that many patients found uncomfortable, inconvenient and time-consuming.

The Optomap is made possible by using a new technology – the Panoramic200™ Retinal Imaging System. The Optomap enables us to see nearly all of your retina. Furthermore, it eliminates the discomfort and inconvenience associated with pupil dilation. As a result, you will not experience blurred vision or sensitivity to light following your eye exam. It is important to note however, that should any abnormalities be detected or if we cannot obtain an acceptable image, dilation may be necessary.

The Optomap exam is simple: at the push of a button, we can generate a computer image of your retina for immediate review. Experience with this technology has already led to improved disease detection and has possibly prevented vision loss and blindness in several patients.

We will be discussing this revolutionary exam with you further at your next appointment. Here at TONGE EYE CARE, we are dedicated to offering our patients the best eye care possible, and acquiring the tools to help us do so. We look forward to seeing you during your next visit – and providing the most comprehensive and advanced vision care available.

Early Detection of Glaucoma with GDxVCC

While the three most common tests for Glaucoma (the pressure check or puff test, visual field analysis and optic nerve evaluation) are useful, they often do not detectglaucoma early enough.

The GDxVCC is the only glaucoma detection technology available that directly and objectively evaluates the nerve fiber layer of the eye. This test is comfortable, does not require drops or pupil dilation and provides results for both eyes within three minutes.

Children's Vision

Kids should have their first exam at the age of 1. At this time the doctor can check that their visual system is developing normally. Early detection at this age can prevent lifelong vision problems. A the age of 3 kids are checked for eye health as well as development of binocular motor skills. Lazy eye, if caught at this time, is most responsive to treatment.

At the age of 5 a child is examined to check the readiness of vision skills. 20-35% of children have a significant need for glasses or other correction for vision problems.

Don't confuse a pediatric or school vision screening for a comprehensive eye exam. Screenings can give a false sense of security. Many kids "pass" a screening, yet do not have 20/20 vision or have developed the vital visual skills needed at school.

Eye Infections, Eye Injuries, Dry Eyes

Our office provides emergency services for eye infections and eye injuries. Please call our office at 770-963-2903 during office hours or our emergency number; 404-257-0814 (Omni Eye Services) after hours or on weekends. Our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. State of the art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye for infection or injury. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.

Dry Eyes: Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and gritty feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluation of the amount of tears on the front of the eye and from review of your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears; eye drops for treating allergies; and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals.

Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes

Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.

Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.

Every patient has different visual needs. We offer the most advanced lenses available. We offer the best lens options such as Anti-Reflective Coating, Transitions lenses and lens materials such as polycarbonate, trivex and high index. We offer all types of lenses such as progressive lenses, computer lenses, sports lenses and sunglass lenses. Our staff is knowledgeable of all the latest trends and technology and will help you to make the perfect choices to suit your individual needs.

Our optical staff is available to adjust and fit your glasses for your comfort and best vision possible.

WHY SHOULD I GET SUNGLASSES?

Sunglasses block harmful UV radiation that causes skin cancer, cataracts and other eye problems. They also make you more comfortable on sunny days. Proper sun protection from bright sunlight can also enhance your ability to see better in low light or at night time.

The effects of UV radiation are cumulative. This means the longer your eyes are exposed to UV radiation, the greater risk of developing such conditions as cataracts or macular degeneration in later life. This is also why it is very important for children to wear sun protection for their eyes, even if they do not need prescription glasses.

Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are medical devices that can only be dispensed by prescription. They must be regarded with the same caution you would use for prescription drugs, which include prescription expiration dates and follow-up visits with your eye doctor. Your eyes go through gradual changes in size, shape and physiological requirements (such as for oxygen) while wearing contact lenses. These changes can affect the health of the cornea and need to be monitored on a regular basis.

Our philosophy in fitting contact lenses is to find the best lens, which will give you a healthy, comfortable fit and excellent vision. Contact lens technology advances all the time. That is why we don't just fit you in the same lens you always have worn. We fit you with the best lens available.

If you are a first-time wearer, we will perform some initial tests to determine the best lenses for you. We will instruct you on the handling and care of your lenses, including how to insert and remove them. After you put your lenses on, we will assess the centering and movement of the lenses, the formation of an adequate tear layer and of course your vision. One to two follow-up appointments will be needed to monitor the progress of your lenses and to correct for any changes to the prescription. This 7-10 day follow-up time gives you the opportunity to evaluate your lenses forcomfort and vision.

If you have allergies, then you know allergies can be particularly annoying to contact lens wearers. In the past many patients had to quit wearing their lenses during allergy season. However, new medications have made it possible for these people to eliminate the burning, itchy eyes. Let us know when you come in for your appointment if you have special allergy needs and we will be happy to help you.

Laser Vision Correction

Everyone is talking about LASIK. Here is a brief description of the procedure;

A flap is cut in the cornea and then the flap is gently folded back. An Excimer Laser is used to reshape the cornea, much like a contact lens forms a new shape on the cornea, only the laser is permanent. The flap is then put back in place, acting like a natural bandage.

The "Wow!" effect of Lasik is the very rapid recovery of vision and the decreased level of discomfort post-operatively. You hear from people that they did not feel anything, and could see well the very first day. Most people have functional vision in 24-48 hours. Although this is true in some cases, it must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, continues to improve for some weeks, even months.

Everyones eyes are different. Even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it does not mean it is right for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right procedure and laser appropriate for you. For many of you who are long-term contact lens wearers our pre-operative input can make the difference between an excellent result and a mediocre one.

Post-operatively we can monitor your eyes, and taper medications to arrive at the best possible result. After all, no one knows your eyes better than your optometrist.

Surgery Co-Management

Tonge Eye Care provides pre- and post-operative care for patients who have undergone cataract surgery, laser surgery and refractive surgery. We are affiliated with surgeons noted for having the most stringent standards and training for themselves as well as their affiliate members.

Additionally, we have working arrangements established with other specialized eye care doctors to manage such things are retinal detachments, retinal tears and hemmorhages.

You can be confident your eyes will be comprehensively managed by the best eye care professionals.

Prescription Release

It is the policy of Tonge Eye Care to routinely release prescriptions for both eyeglasses and contact lenses, providing that the proper procedures are followed:

CONTACT LENSES: Prescriptions will be issued for replacement lenses. During the initial contact lens fitting period, we provide the contact lenses for the patient. This is required in order that we may properly evaluate the performance of the lenses. In addition, all recommended follow-up evaluations MUST be performed before a prescription is issued. Yearly visits to check the performance of the contact lenses are required in order for us to issue updated lens prescriptions. Any examinations required because of difficulties with lenses provided by another supplier will be performed at the expense of the patient. Any reorders of lenses, for whatever reason, are to be handled between the patient and that supplier.

EYEGLASSES: It is routine to issue a valid eyeglass prescription at any time a patient may request. Eyeglass prescriptions are valid for one year.

Payment/Insurance

All non-covered services, deductibles and co-payments are due at the time of service. We will be happy to discuss fees in advance and provide an estimate on any service we provide. A minimum 50% deposit is required on all eyeglass orders. We accept cash, check, MasterCard, Visa and Discover.

FILING INSURANCE

To determine your VSP Benefits online, click here.

We participate in many insurance plans, including Medicare, Bluevision and VSP. Vision coverage varies from company to company and many times within one particular insurance carrier. Please call your insurance representative for you specific coverage and benefits before your appointment. If we are not providers on your plan, remember to ask if you have out-of-network benefits on your plan, because if you do, we can still see you.

If you are unsure of your insurance provider, we ask that you pay for services at the time of your visit. We will give you the appropriate receipts so that you can file for reimbursement from your insurance carrier. We can file directly with insurance companies only if we are providers.

Our office will not enter into a dispute with your insurance company over your claim. This is your responsibility and obligation. We will file your claim one time only. You will receive a monthly statement showing your balance due. If at the end of 60 days your insurance company has not paid, you are responsible for the entire balance. Upon request, we will supply you with a copy of the claim, so you can re-submit if necessary.

In order to honor any insurance benefits, you must provide insurance identification (i.e. insurance cards) and we must be able to verify the current benefits available.
